What are App Store Analytics: App Store Active Devices?

“App Store Analytics: App Store Active Devices” is a usage metric available to iOS developers. It measures the number of devices that register at least one session during a selected period.

A “session” happens when an app is used for at least two seconds at a time. If User A, for example, opens your app, then immediately closes it before it has time to load, Apple will NOT register a session and User A’s device will remain inactive in terms of this metric. If User A opens your app again the following day and actually uses it—even if it’s only for a few seconds—Apple WILL register a session and User A’s device will become active again in terms of this metric.

It’s important to remember that the “App Store Analytics: App Store Active Devices” metric is based on devices running iOS 8 or tvOS 9, and beyond. In addition, active device totals are only measured for users who have agreed to share their data. As such, the information it shares is incomplete.
